The Deep Brief is governed by its editorial commitments, not by the priorities of sponsors, advertisers, or institutional patrons. That independence has a foundation: the readers who choose to sustain it.
Why membership?
Membership reflects a relationship rather than a transaction. Readers are not purchasing access to individual articles. They are helping sustain an independent publication devoted to international law and ocean governance. The language of membership recognises that distinction.
The Founding Period
The Deep Brief launched on 8 June 2026. The founding period extends through 30 September 2026. During this period, every issue — flagship analyses, The Watch, The Marginal Note, and The Clause — is freely accessible to all readers who subscribe. Issues 01 through 09, together with all short-form publications released during the founding period, remain permanently available as the founding archive.
From 1 October 2026, The Deep Brief enters its subscriber-supported phase. New flagship issues and all short-form publications become exclusive to members.
Three statuses
Founding Subscriber
Anyone who subscribes before 1 October 2026 becomes a Founding Subscriber. This is a permanent founding designation, earned by joining during the publication's founding period. It requires no payment and carries no obligation. Founding Subscribers have full access to the founding archive in perpetuity.
Founding Member
A Founding Subscriber who elects paid membership by 31 December 2026 becomes a Founding Member. Founding Members are the readers who chose to sustain The Deep Brief during its founding year. In recognition of that, they receive the permanent Founding Rate — $9.99 per month or $99 per year — locked against future increases for as long as membership remains active.
Member
From 1 January 2027, anyone who joins, or a Founding Subscriber who did not elect paid membership by 31 December 2026, becomes a Member at the same starting rate as Founding Members. The rate is not locked and is subject to future adjustment.
What membership includes
All members — Founding Members and Members — receive access to Flagship Issues from Issue 10 onwards, The Watch, The Marginal Note, The Clause, and the Annual Digital Volume in PDF and ePub delivered in the first quarter of each year.
Founding Members additionally receive an opt-in listing in the inaugural Annual Digital Volume, acknowledging those who sustained The Deep Brief during its founding year. Alphabetical, institutional.
